3D Asset vs Kenney: which 3D kit fits your project?

UPDATED
5 MIN READ · BY 3D ASSET

Choose Kenney when you need free, public-domain (CC0) assets with a clean, simple style and can live with small kits. Choose 3D Asset when you need larger, more detailed packs with PBR or atlas materials, ready-made scenes, Draco-compressed GLB and typed React Three Fiber components. Kenney kits ship FBX, OBJ and usually glTF; 3D Asset ships glTF in every pack.

Kenney facts checked on 30 October 2026 from the kit pages linked below. Formats vary from kit to kit; check the one you need.

When Kenney is the better choice

  • Your budget is zero, or you are prototyping and will replace art later.
  • You need public-domain terms — for example to redistribute the raw files in an open-source project or a template.
  • The simple, readable Kenney look is the style you want.

When 3D Asset is the better choice

  • You want a finished-looking world: detailed buildings with storefronts, signs, ivy and street furniture, and a ready-made scene to start from.
  • You build for the web: files are already Draco-compressed GLB with WebP textures, and every model has a typed React Three Fiber component.
  • You need variations without modelling: most models have colour, size and detail options you can change in the browser editor and export.
  • You want to mix themes: every pack uses the same units (1 unit = 1 m), +Y up and pivots at ground level. The realistic packs (Brown City, Suburban, Industrial, Japan) are also built at real-world size; stylised packs keep their own proportions.

Using both

Kenney props can fill gaps in a 3D Asset scene, but a shared file format does not mean shared proportions. Kenney’s kits are stylised and are not necessarily modelled at real-world size. Measure one Kenney model next to one of ours, work out a scale factor, and apply it once to the whole kit rather than per placement.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kenney really free for commercial use?

Yes. Kenney’s game assets are released under CC0, which places them in the public domain: commercial use, modification and redistribution are allowed and attribution is optional.

Can I redistribute 3D Asset files like CC0 files?

No. The 3D Asset license allows commercial use inside your own projects, but not reselling or redistributing the files themselves, for example as part of another asset library.

Can I try 3D Asset for free?

Yes. There are free sample models from most packs on the samples page, under the same license as the paid packs.
