3D Asset vs Quaternius: free low poly or paid packs?

UPDATED
5 MIN READ · BY 3D ASSET

Quaternius is a strong choice for free CC0 low poly models, especially characters, animals and nature, with formats that vary by pack. 3D Asset suits projects that need complete, consistent environments — large packs, each built to one consistent scale, with ready-made scenes, Draco GLB files and typed React Three Fiber components — and a supported commercial license.

When Quaternius is the better choice

  • You need free models with public-domain terms.
  • You want a particular small set — a creature, a weapon set, a nature kit — rather than a whole environment.
  • You work in Blender or a game engine and are happy to convert FBX to glTF yourself.

When 3D Asset is the better choice

  • You need a whole world that matches: buildings, streets, props and vehicles made as one kit on one scale.
  • You ship on the web and want GLB files that are already compressed, plus typed R3F components.
  • You want a ready-made scene to start from instead of laying out a level from zero.
  • You need characters that share one rig and ship with clips: every Blocky Character uses the same 65-bone skeleton with Mixamo bone names, so one set of clips drives all of them.

Frequently asked questions

Are Quaternius models free for commercial use?

Yes. Quaternius releases models under CC0, so commercial use is allowed without attribution. Some extra content is reserved for Patreon supporters.

Do Quaternius packs include GLB?

Some do. Many packs list FBX, OBJ and Blend files; others add glTF. Check the file list of the pack you need.

Can I use Mixamo animations with 3D Asset characters?

Yes, that is what the rig is built for. Blocky Characters use the standard 65-bone Mixamo skeleton — mixamorig bone names and Mixamo’s rest orientations — so Mixamo clips bind by bone name without retargeting. Blocky proportions differ from Mixamo’s default character, though, so preview a clip before relying on it: foot contact, hands touching the body and props held in hand are where differences show.
